Artscape is a not-for-profit organization that
makes space for creativity and transforms communities.
In 2007, Toronto’s historic Theatre Passe Muraille was threatened with shutting down its operations while dealing with a crippling debt load.
Artscape, the City of Toronto and Theatre Passe Muraille partnered to preserve this beloved venue that has meant so much to the development of Canadian theatre.
In an effort to save the theatre company and the heritage theatre building, the City purchased 16 Ryerson Avenue building from the theatre company, with Artscape leasing the building at $1 per year and managing the ongoing capital requirements.
Artscape leased the facility back to Theatre Passe Muraille at $1 per year plus operating expenses so the theatre company could continue to manage the day-to-day operations.
Artscape’s excellent reputation as a builder and project manager allowed the City to feel comfortable that the building would be appropriately managed in the future.
